The first trailer for A24’s upcoming dark comedy, Death of a Unicorn, has arrived.
Set for release in spring 2025, Death of a Unicorn stars Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega as a father and daughter who accidentally kill a unicorn with their car en route to a weekend retreat with the father’s billionaire boss, Dell Leopold, and his family.
The trailer depicts Rudd and Ortega’s characters as they hesitatingly reveal the dead unicorn to the Leopolds, who begin exploiting the discovery, harvesting magical properties from the corpse to find a cure for cancer and, as they see it, seize “an opportunity for greatness” and “immortality.” Eventually, though, we come to find that the unicorn isn’t quite dead, as a horrific, blood-lusting version of it resurrects to seek vengeance.

Death of a Unicorn is produced by Ari Aster and marks the debut of director Alex Scharfman. The soundtrack was composed by the iconic John Carpenter, and rounding out the cast with Rudd and Ortega is Richard E. Grant, Will Poulter, Téa Leoni, Anthony Carrigan, Sunita Mani, and more.
The film was first announced in May 2023, and filming began that July in Hungary, despite the then-ongoing actors strike. Because A24 wasn’t affiliated with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, it was one of 39 independent productions that were given approval by SAG-AFTRA to continue shooting.
Meanwhile, 2024 was another good year for A24 — Consequence recently named Jane Schoenbrun’s I Saw the TV Glow the best movie of the year in our annual rundown, which also included A24 titles Love Lies Bleeding and Sing Sing.
