While Fatboy Slim remains active as a DJ, it’s been 20 years since his last studio album. Don’t expect that to change, as the English musician has admitted he’s lost his “passion for making music.”

The electronic artist born Norman Cook recently spoke about the current status of his music career in an interview with The Sun, revealing his 2024 singles, “Bus Stop Please” and “Role Model,” were made “just to play on the side.”

“The thing is, you can’t make music unless you’re absolutely passionate about it and it drives you from the moment you wake up in the morning,” Fatboy Slim said. “I just don’t seem to feel like that anymore.”

He continued, “I feel like that about DJing and about putting on things like this, but I’ve kind of lost my passion for making music. For five years, I tried to beat myself up about it and go, ‘You should be doing this.’ But then I thought, ‘Well, everybody likes my DJing and I enjoy that more, so I’ll do that.’”

However, Fatboy Slim did give fans a sliver of hope for a new album by saying, “I’m hoping that one day the passion will come back.”

Fatboy Slim’s last studio album, Palookaville, was released in October 2004. Since then, he’s collaborated with David Byrne on the 2010 concept album Here Lies Love, which was adapted as an off-Broadway musical in 2013. Earlier this year, the Broadway staging of the musical received four Tony Award nominations.

Next year, Fatboy Slim is slated to tour Australia and headline festivals including Kendal Calling and Latitude Festival. Get tickets here.
