Following an onstage fight that apparently broke up Jane’s Addiction, three of the four members are making new music together. Bassist Eric Avery, guitarist Dave Navarro, and drummer Stephen Perkins are recording new songs minus singer Perry Farrell.
Back in September, Jane’s Addiction made headlines when Farrell got into a physical altercation with Navarro during a show in Boston, at one point punching the guitarist onstage. As the two musicians were being separated, it appeared that Avery landed a few blows on Farrell. And a later report from a crew member revealed that Farrell punched Navarro again — this time in the face — backstage shortly thereafter.
The rest of the band’s tour was canceled, and while an official announcement was never made, Navarro suggested that the band had broken up in an Instagram post, saying, “I’m gutted that things ended this way.”
Now, Avery, Navarro, and Perkins are laying down new music together, with Avery posting a video of himself recording bass parts to a Perkins drum track, with the caption: “Writing some more new lines to some of Stephens drumming. Look forward to getting some Mr Navarro on them. 2025! @stephenperkinsdrummer @davenavarro.”
Perkins shared Avery’s Instagram post, and added, “Love that dark swing.”
While no specific plans for the music have been detailed, there’s speculation that Avery and Navarro might be reviving their long dormant side project Deconstruction. The outfit featured the two musicians alongside drummer Michael Murphy, and only lasted a couple of years. They released one self-titled album in 1994.
The self-titled Deconstruction album was recently reissued via streaming services, and Avery and Navarro have each posted about the project within the past couple weeks. “Having revisited it after all these years I believe this record contains some of my favorite recorded playing and interplay between E’s bass and my guitar,” wrote Navarro. “I am very happy this has been rereleased and is available for streaming.”
