Actor George Clooney, his wife Amal, and their twins Ella and Alexander have been granted citizenship by the government of France.
As AP News reports, the Clooney’s “farm in France” has been their primary residence since 2021. Clooney told Esquire that when it came to his now-eight-year-old twins, “I was worried about raising our kids in LA, in the culture of Hollywood. I don’t want them to be walking around worried about paparazzi. I don’t want them being compared to somebody else’s famous kids.”
The family live in Brignoles in southern France, where French privacy laws protect Clooneys young and old from unauthorized photography. His kids, Clooney added, are “not on their iPads, you know? They have dinner with grown-ups and have to take their dishes in. They have a much better life.”
Brignoles Mayor Didier Brémond described the Clooneys as “a very simple and very accessible family” in conversation with broadcaster BFMTV. He said that the actor shops in town and attended the opening of a local movie theater, and claimed the decision to become a French citizen spoke to Clooney’s “love for our country.”
“Here, he wants to live normally and that’s what he is trying to do,” Brémond said.
It is not currently clear if the Clooneys retained their American citizenship.
The actor’s latest film, Jay Kelly, is one of our favorite films of 2025, and it’s in theaters now. Up next, he will reportedly reunite with Brad Pitt for Ocean’s 14.
