Matthew Sweet suffered a “debilitating stroke” while on tour in Toronto earlier this month.

A GoFundMe page has been started to help cover the cost of Sweet’s medical bills, which could exceed a quarter of a million dollars. The 60-year-old musician “must now be flown back to the States on an ambulance transport plane with medical staff on board, to a specialized rehabilitation center, where he will receive around-the-clock care and therapy for six weeks. He will then require months of treatment and rehabilitation that we hope will lead to a full recovery,” according to Catherine Lyons of Russell Carter Artist Management, who set up the GoFundMe.

Sweet is best known for ’90s power pop hits “Girlfriend,” “I’ve Been Waiting,” and “Sick of Myself.” His most recent album, Catspaw, was released in 2021.
