Suicide Squad: Early Harley Quinn Costume Design Revealed In BTS Photo

Entertainment

Harley Quinn‘s early character design for David Ayer’s Suicide Squad is revealed. Debuted by Margot Robbie in the 2016 film, the character has been an instant fan-favorite. She’s easily one of the few standouts in the 2016 villain-centric movie that rounded up some of the most lethal antagonists in the DC universe for a mission.

Suicide Squad went on to become a box office success, earning $746.8 million worldwide against a budget of just $175 million, not to mention an Academy Award for make-up and hairstyling. So, greenlighting projects with it as its springboard came easy for Warner Bros. – most of those would’ve included Robbie’s Harley. That includes a film focused on Harley Quinn and Joker as well as Gotham City Sirens. This proved the popularity of the character, and while both films’ future is currently on hold, the studio found ways to capitalize on Harley’s anti-hero with Birds of Prey (And the Fantabulous Emancipation of One Harley Quinn) James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad.

In light of the upcoming release of Birds of Prey, a new look at one of the early character designs for Harley Quinn is released. Posted on Reddit by user with the handle /AldebaranTauro, the image is believed to be shared by Ayer but the post is no longer available. In any case, check it out below:

There are significant changes made to the aforementioned design compared to what Robbie ultimately wore in the film. While she maintained the character’s signature pigtails, Suicide Squad opted against the full bangs, and instead only gave her wisps to frame her face. As for the costume itself, this one seems to be inspired by her patterned suits from the comic books – a more specialized costume compared to her casual ensemble in the film. Finally, she was able to retain her bat and the “PUDDIN” collar. Ayer has been sharing BTS images from his DC film, and a version of this one appears to be quite similar to the one he revealed las year, except that Harley’s hair was down.

Looking at some of the promotional images for Harley for Birds of Prey, she finally gets the shorter bangs, although not as full as the one in this Suicide Squad character design. And with her next outing in the DCEU already confirmed through next year’s The Suicide Squad, it’s safe to assume that she’ll debut a slightly different do again – perhaps a version of this costume could finally debut on the big screen. Regardless, one thing is for sure – there won’t be any scarcity of Robbie’s Harley Quinn at least in the foreseeable future.
