Henry Cavill’s Superman faces Keanu Reeves’ Neo in new The Matrix fan art. Though the most recent Matrix movie came out in 2003, a new film is headed to theaters in 2022. It will reunite many of the franchise’s original cast members, including Reeves, Carrie-Anne Moss, and Jada Pinkett Smith. Much of The Matrix 4 remains a mystery, especially because the film was only four weeks into production when the coronavirus forced a filming shutdown. Before that, fans got a look at Neo and Trinity (Moss) riding a motorcycle, as well as a peek at Trinity’s new powers, thanks to set videos. As it will be almost 20 years since the last entry in the franchise by the time The Matrix 4 hits theaters, anticipation for the movie should only grow in the next two years.

Neo’s sparring partner Superman is also feeling some audience anticipation right now. Just when many Superman fans assumed Cavill’s time in the DC Extended Universe was over came the surprising announcement he’s in talks to reprise his role. Unfortunately, Man of Steel 2 isn’t in development at this time, with rumors suggesting Cavill will have to gain some momentum with supporting roles in other DCEU movies first. Shazam 2 and Aquaman 2 are both films Cavill could potentially cameo in, while many others, such as Matt Reeves’ The Batman, are apparently not likely. Hopefully, DCEU fans will soon find out about Cavill’s role going forward.
In the new fan art by artist ApexForm, Neo prepares to battle Superman, who can be seen in the reflection of his glasses. Superman’s eyes glow red in the picture, adding to the intensity. Considering Superman and Neo are from different franchises, it’s highly unlikely the two will ever cross paths. However, it’s still fun to imagine which character would come out victorious in a potential fight. Superman seems like the obvious choice because his powers are so well-known. However, he and Neo actually possess many of the same abilities, such as flying and super strength. Of course, the fight would have to happen inside the Matrix for it to be evenly matched.
Due to The Matrix 4‘s delay and uncertainty about when Cavill will return to the DCEU, it will be awhile before fans see Superman or Neo on the big screen. In the meantime, this Matrix fan art shows what a fight between two of cinema’s biggest heroes could look like. There’s no way to know for sure if Superman or Neo would win, but fans should have a fun time theorizing which fighter would come out on top.
