How does Superman get his iconic black suit in Zack Snyder’s cut of Justice League? As fans eagerly await the release of the Snyder Cut, recently announced to be releasing on HBO Max, director Zack Snyder has been offering tidbits of information and glimpses of scenes that never made it into the 2017 cut of Justice League (which had been finished by Joss Whedon). One of the confirmed changes in Snyder’s cut of Justice League will see Superman don his iconic black costume from the comic books, first worn by the Man of Steel when he returned from the dead after fighting Doomsday. Similarly to the source material, Superman would’ve returned from the dead after fighting Doomsday in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice and been seen sporting a cinematic version of the black suit. Fans have been clamoring for Superman to don his iconic black suit from the ’90s since the Kryptonian shuffled off the mortal coil in Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice, with many artists around the web conjuring fan art depicting what a Henry Cavill-Superman would look like in Superman’s new black suit, even going as far as including the character’s ‘sports mullet’ from his mid-’90s resurrection. As fans’ prayers have been answered, the scenes that were shot including Superman’s suit will be included in the Snyder Cut, one of which has been released online. The short clip shows Superman – newly returned from the dead – approaching Alfred in the Batcave to enquire after Batman’s location, fully decked out in the black suit, replete with silver ‘S’ on the chest.

This sequence obviously implies that Superman would have acquired the suit immediately upon his resurrection. That fact is confirmed by Snyder, who mentions on the Man of Steel commentary track that the Kryptonian ship that serves as Superman’s Fortress of Solitude in the DCEU has the power to replicate and produce suits. There is a deleted scene from Justice League which shows Clark being offered the choice between a suit of Kryptonian battle armor, and the black Superman suit. The clip ends before revealing what choice he made, but the subsequent appearance of Superman all in black in front of Alfred tells fans that is when he makes his choice.

The reason behind choosing the black suit over the Kryptonian armor could be inferred as an affirmation that Superman has finally chosen the Earth over his Kryptonian heritage. Although Zack Snyder had to sneak the suit past Warner Bros executives, it can and will finally be seen in the Snyder Cut when it bows on HBO Max in 2021. As the suit has even been given the appeal of the suit’s original designer, comic book artist Dan Jurgens, fans can rest assured that the black suit is given its due respect on-screen in the Snyder Cut of Justice League, and is worthy of its cameo adorning Superman’s shoulders.
