The MCU Gave Sam’s Captain America His “I Can Do This All Day” Moment

Entertainment

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier gives Sam Wilson his version of Steve Rogers’ “I can do this all day” signature line. The former Captain America had several memorable lines throughout his stint in the MCU. But this is arguably his most iconic one, as it encapsulated Steve’s principle when it came to fighting for all that’s good. Now that Sam has successfully inherited the superhero mantle from the super-soldier, it only makes sense that he too gets his own tag line.

Initially turning down the opportunity to be Captain America, Sam gave the shield to the government assuming that it was only going to be for safekeeping. However, the organization had a different plan, handing it to John Walker instead. For the most part of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Sam was adamant that he wasn’t up for the task of wielding the shield, especially after he learned of what happened to Isaiah Bradley — technically the first Black Captain America. But after it became clear that Walker was not worthy of representing the stars and stripes and there’s no one else he trusted more to carry the legacy of the mantle, Same eventually changed, his mind leading to his debut as the Star-Spangled Avenger.

Sam’s Captain America will be different from Steve in more ways than one; their origins are different and that contributes to their unique points of view. However, it’s also clear that they share several intrinsic qualities as the carrier of the shield. For starters, both are good men, arguably the most important requirement to embody the stars and stripes. They also believe in the goodness of people. Finally, the former and current Captain America are fueled with their unbreakable spirit to standing up for what’s right. It didn’t matter what the odds were, Steve will continue to fight until he’s totally unable to, hence his “I can do this all day” line. Sam, on the other hand, got his version of the saying when Karli Morgenthau asked him to stay down during their last confrontation in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier finale, to which he just said “No.” It’s short and less dramatic than Steve’s, but it allows Sam to establish his agency in a straightforward way without having to explain himself. It’s a powerful word especially for Black people who have endured all kinds of abuse for centuries.

Sam Wilson Captain America Avengers Endgame

One of the main reasons why Sam initially didn’t want to be Captain America was because he was too intimidated by Steve’s legacy. Having been an ally and friend of the super soldier, Falcon saw first hand Steve’s dedication to the responsibility as the wielder of the shield; despite the many trials and tribulations that came his way, he never compromised on his morals. Despite having doubts about taking on the mantle, Steve long knew that Sam was the best choice to be his successor. Sam may not be physically enhanced, but Steve is assured that his friend will continue the good work he’s done as Captain America. He was proven right throughout the events of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, particularly in its final episode.

The question now is when Sam, as Captain America finally gets the chance to say “Avengers Assemble” — a line that Steve never delivered until Avengers: Endgame. Marvel Studios hasn’t announced Avengers 5 as it focuses on character-driven projects like The Falcon and the Winter Soldier. However, as the new Star-Spangled Avenger, it’s safe to say that Sam will eventually have the chance to do this when Earth’s Mightiest Heroes inevitably reconvenes in the future.
