[Warning – Spoilers for No More Heroes 3 ahead!]
The final battle in No More Heroes 3 is full of references to a popular game on Nintendo Switch, and it gives fans a taste of what could have been, had a better decision been made regarding said game. No More Heroes 3 is a Nintendo Switch exclusive and there’s currently no word regarding a multiplatform release, though given the history of the series, it wouldn’t be surprising to see No More Heroes 3 on PC in the future.
The No More Heroes franchise has been pegged for Switch content since the beginning. Nintendo involved developer Suda51 in the premier event for the Switch, where he promised that a game involving Travis Touchdown would be coming to the system. That game would later turn out to be Travis Strikes Again: No More Heroes, but a full entry in the series was announced further down the line.
No More Heroes 3 is full of a variety of references to different video games, the kind of referential humor and storytelling that often give the series a lot of its charm, but it ends on a huge gag that will likely make certain Nintendo fans quite happy. Once Travis reaches the end boss, he is thrust into a fight that will feel more than a little familiar.
Travis Touches Down In Super Smash Bros.
The final battle against Damon in No More Heroes 3 is done in the style of Super Smash Bros., with the two fighters stuck on an Omega-style stage, with a 2D perspective, and a percentage meter for health. The fight even ends with a “Game” message, to further cement the connection, once the enemy is thrown off the side of the stage. What makes this fight so special, aside from the humor itself, is that it gives Super Smash Bros. Ultimate fans a chance to play as Travis in a battle straight out of the fighting game. Since it’s unlikely that Travis will be the final Smash DLC character, this is probably their only chance to do so.
The reason Travis is unlikely to be a full Smash character is that he’s currently a Mii Swordfighter costume, which pretty much rules out his chances of taking a spot. This wouldn’t be so bad if some of the DLC slots hadn’t been blown on characters like Piranha Plant, Min Min, or Byleth. A lot of the Super Smash Bros. Ultimate DLC representatives have come from Nintendo Switch exclusives, but despite Travis being just as deserving of a spot as Pyra/Mythra, he was relegated to Mii Fighter costume status. In the end, Suda51 did what Masahiro Sakurai didn’t, and gave No More Heroes fans the chance to play Travis in a Super Smash Bros. battle.
