Ghostbusters: Afterlife Image Shows Finn Wolfhard With Ecto-1

Entertainment

A new image from Ghostbusters: Afterlife shows Finn Wolfhard’s character with Ecto-1. The last installment in the Ghostbusters series came in 2016. However, the female-centric reboot starring Kristen Wiig, Melissa McCarthy, Leslie Jones, and Kate McKinnon had few connections to the original movies. It was also not very well received by fans of the franchise. First announced in 2019, Afterlife will act as a direct sequel to the original films from 1984 and 1989 that harkens back to its roots with cameos from Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, and the inclusion of the iconic ghostbusting vehicle, Ecto-1.

From director Jason Reitman (son of the original Ghostbuster helmer Ivan Reitman), Afterlife follows a single mother (Carrie Coon) and her two kids (Finn Wolfhard and Mckenna Grace) who move into a farmhouse left to them by her father, Egon Spengler (Harold Ramis). The family soon discovers Ecto-1 and other old Ghostbuster’s equipment on the premises, which they must use to save the town from paranormal threats, including the possible return of the original villain Gozer the Gozerian. Paul Rudd rounds out the cast as the kid’s teacher, Mr. Grooberson.

Now, Fandango has a preview of the entire 2021 fall movie lineup, which includes a look at the eagerly awaited Ghostbusters sequel. The photo shows Finn Wolfhard as Trevor, Mckenna Grace as Phoebe, and Logan Kim as Podcast, Phoebe’s friend and classmate, with Ecto-1 right behind them. The three are looking ahead in awe, likely at some paranormal danger in the distance. Check out the new image below:

As a legacy sequel, Afterlife is intended to dawn a new era for the franchise and, in turn, introduce the Ghostbusters brand to a new generation of audiences. Though there aren’t many details on the future, it will likely be lead by Wolfhard and Grace’s new characters, Trevor and Phoebe, who are the grandchildren of the original Ghostbuster, Spengler. The next look at what’s to come in Afterlife will be at this year’s New York Comic-Con.

Even before Afterlife‘s release was delayed from July 2020 to November 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Ghostbusters fans have been waiting a long time to see a faithful follow-up to the original movies. Unfortunately, fans will have to wait just a little longer, as the film was recently reshuffled to November 19 to fill the slot left by another anticipated legacy sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which was pushed back to May 2022. All the while, Sony has remained committed to a theaters-only release for Ghostbusters: Afterlife
