One of the Biggest Box Office Bombs of All Time

Entertainment

None of the numbers for the Tom Cruise-starring movie Digger have been good so far — not its Rotten Tomatoes score, not its opening weekend box office. And now, according to The Wrap, here comes another one: The film is not predicted to make more than $40 million in theaters.

This means it’s set to lose $250 million for Warner Bros., thanks to a production budget ranging from $163 million to $173 million, plus a marketing budget of $100 million. This would make it one of the biggest box office bombs of all time, in territory similar to notorious flops like 2012’s John Carter and 2013’s The Lone Ranger.

Digger opened to $8 million in its opening weekend, one of Cruise’s worst openings ever at the box office. The Alejandro G. Iñárritu film, also starring John Goodman, Riz Ahmed, Sandra Hüller, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Jesse Plemons, is a twisty dark comedy about “the most powerful man in the world” facing the consequences of his actions — making it Cruise’s most political movie in decades.
