Star Trek: Picard Season 2: Release Date, Story Details & Cast

Entertainment

Here’s when Star Trek: Picard will return for season 2 and what it will be about. The second new Star Trek series executive produced by Alex Kurtzman has been a gigantic hit for CBS All-Access, following the success of Star Trek: Discovery. Longtime Trekkers have flocked back to the new adventures of the beloved Starfleet legend embodied by Patrick Stewart, and Star Trek: Picard has also brought new fans to the fold.

Along with catching Trekkers up on the whereabouts of many favorites from Star Trek: The Next Generation and Star Trek: Voyager, Star Trek: Picard season 1 told a complex story about the role of artificial lifeforms in the United Federation of Planets. The series’ moral quandary and central mysteries revolved around Soji (Isa Briones), the synthetic daughter of the late Commander Data (Brent Spiner). The existence of Soji and the other androids built after Data’s death was threatened by an evil cabal of Romulans, who believed the synthetics, left unchecked, would destroy the galaxy. Meanwhile, Jean-Luc Picard has been dealing with a fatal illness and launched his latest adventure with a new crew as a way to find purpose and right some old wrongs in his twilight years.

But Picard’s story is far from over and now that Star Trek: Picard season 1 has wrapped, Trekkers are naturally looking ahead to a second season – which will happen! Here’s everything we know so far about Star Trek: Picard season 2.

When Will Star Trek: Picard Season 2 Release?

CBS All-Access renewed Star Trek: Picard for season 2 over a month before its season 1 premiere in January 2020. (Patrick Stewart has also indicated his interest in a third season.) As hoped for, the series has been a gigantic hit for CBS’ streaming service, which has recently unlocked every Star Trek: Picard episode for non-subscribers to watch free for the next month. Before the coronavirus outbreak halted all TV and movie production, Star Trek: Picard season 2 was expected to bow in late 2020 or early 2021 but it will likely be pushed back to mid-to-late 2021 now.

Star Trek: Picard season 2 also gets a new showrunner in Terry Matalas (12 Monkeys), who replaces season 1’s head writer Michael Chabon. With the state of California awarding Star Trek: Picard a huge $20-million in tax credits, this will incentivize the series to ramp up production and follow up the success of Star Trek: Picard season 1.

Who Will Be In The Cast Of Star Trek: Picard Season 2?

Rios, Soji, and Raffi in Star Trek: Picard

Obviously, Sir Patrick Stewart will return in the titular role as the Starfleet legend. Star Trek: Picard also successfully created memorable new characters so Jean-Luc’s motley crew played by Isa Briones (Soji), Santiago Cabrera (Cristobal Rios), Raffi Musiker (Michelle Hurd), Agnes Jurati (Alison Pill), and Elnor (Evan Evagora) are all expected to return for Star Trek: Picard season 2, as well as Narek (Harry Treadaway) and Seven of Nine (Jeri Ryan).

It’s unclear whether TNG castmembers Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, and Brent Spiner will reprise their roles as Will Riker, Deanna Troi, and Data in Star Trek: Picard season 2 since Patrick Stewart has made it clear TNG characters will only appear if it serves the story. Still, fans hope to catch up with Worf (Michael Dorn), Geordi LaForge (LeVar Burton), and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) in Star Trek: Picard season 2. However, Stewart personally invited Whoopi Goldberg to join season 2, so fans can potentially look forward to an appearance by her character, Picard’s old friend Guinan.

What Will Star Trek: Picard Season 2’s Story Be About?

Star Trek Picard Soji Isa Briones

Star Trek: Picard season 1 built to an epic conflict between the Romulans and synthetics over the fate of Soji’s android family on the planet Coppelius. Further, Jean-Luc literally received a new lease on life that set up his next adventure with his ragtag crew in season 2. Also exciting for Trekkers is the fact that Star Trek: Picard season 2 will begin the exploration of the 25th century, which opens up the exciting possibilities of more compelling themes to be explored in Picard’s continuing adventure in the final frontier.
