Moschino Heads To Sesame Street With a New Collaboration

Fashion

Jeremy Scott is fashion’s ultimate nostalgia merchant. Barbie, My Little Pony, SpongeBob SquarePants: He’s put them all on a runway at some point. A regressive mood has predominated during the pandemic—we’ve found ourselves swaddled in sweatsuits, tie-dyeing and coloring our way through quarantine as though we’re back in the recess yard. But the Moschino creative director was, as always, way ahead of us—even when it comes to looking back. As a ’90s raver, he remembers the scene’s proudly juvenile aesthetic, including Sesame Street character clothing: “I was already nostalgic for it at 20.”

Our collective desire to return to a more innocent time inspired a 28-piece collaboration between the beloved kids’ show and the Italian fashion house, launching in June and designed for an ageless audience. The face of the capsule is country superstar Kacey Musgraves, who clearly shares Scott’s appreciative eye for all things retro-kitsch. (He once dressed her up as a life-size Barbie for the camp-themed Met Gala.) “I got wind that she was a Sesame Street fan, and was able to make this magical moment happen,” he says.

Speaking of magical moments, Scott is hoping he’ll also get to fulfill what he calls “one of my lifelong dreams”—actually going to Sesame Street. “I was like, ‘Oh, I need to go on set. I need to be up in this.’ So that’s my hope and prayer: that I get to get on Sesame Street for real.” And it certainly doesn’t sound like he’ll need instructions on how to get there.
