3 Shopping Tips for Finding a Jumpsuit That Fits

Fashion

I had a rocky relationship with jumpsuits for years, but finally came around after figuring out
exactly what to look for. Now, it’s all love!

I was usually the tallest girl in the room growing up, which meant shopping for any kind of one-piece (from bathing suits to rompers) was always a challenge. So, when jumpsuits started trending a few years ago, I was skeptical—but I loved the fun simplicity of the look, and I refused to give up searching for one that would work for my proportions. As a size 20 standing at 5’10, finding a jumpsuit to fit my waist, long torso and legs wasn’t always easy. But as I learned, a few key considerations when shopping can save you a lot of precious time and energy (no more fitting room cardio!). Here are three things that really make a difference when searching for the best-fitting jumpsuit.

Consider comfort

My style goal as we all continue to work from home is “put-together enough to hop on a Zoom call, but comfy enough to feel like I’m still in PJs.” Lucky for me, as loungewear took over last year, jumpsuits became the ideal WFH option. Since wearing a jumpsuit means that you basically have to get naked to go to the washroom, it’s extra important that getting into (and out of) it feels comfortable and not like a marathon. If you feel restricted at all by the fabric or proportions, a jumpsuit can start to feel claustrophobic. Move around when you’re trying on different options to make sure you can raise your arms and bend over comfortably without the jumpsuit riding up too high.

Know your measurements

Since IRL store visits aren’t possible for a lot of folks right now, prepare for online shopping with a few key details. As tempting as it may be to judge only by pictures and reviews (which are also great indicators of fit and quality), the best approach is to find a measuring tape and get to know your measurements, from your bust to your inseam. When you’re browsing, check out the dimensions of the jumpsuit—a lot of sites will list both the top length and the inseam, which is super helpful in finding the best fit. Consider ordering a couple of different sizes to choose from (just be sure to check out the store’s refund and exchange policy first).

Go for versatility

Here’s what I love the most about jumpsuits right now: The options are truly endless. Some are perfect for lazy Sundays, while other glam options make the best looks for nights out (or in—anyone else getting dressed up to watch awards shows in their living room?). Jumpsuits are also great transitional pieces since you can easily pair them with a cute jean jacket or a sleek trench coat, or wear a long-sleeve tee underneath. A few favourites from my own collection: a stretchy black jumpsuit that I pretty much live in all summer; a royal blue number with a ruffled collar that looks amazing on a dancefloor; and a leopard-print look that I paired with a crop top to meet Lizzo (who complimented my look!)

If nothing else convinces you, consider this: A jumpsuit requires almost zero thought in the morning. Just throw it on, grab a coffee and you’re ready to face the day!
