What This ELLE Editor Is Putting in Her Shopping Cart This Fall

Fashion

Since joining the ELLE team as fashion market editor in 2015, Justine Carreon has become one of the most prominent voices in the style-sphere. Her distinctly modern aesthetic has made her a go-to authority for all things fashion.

Carreon’s sartorial sensibility is rooted in her bicoastal lifestyle, inspired by weekends spent surfing or hiking, evenings attending the latest gallery openings—and of course, adjusting to workdays back at the office as we enter another new normal this fall. Because she leads such an eclectic life, Carreon needs a wardrobe that works as hard as she does. She used the new Stitch Fix Freestyle personalized shopping experience to curate a series of looks that reflect both her distinctive style and professional ethos. Ahead, Carreon shows us what she’s putting in her shopping cart for fall.

Gallery Hopping

My favorite weekend activity in the city is visiting a string of galleries and museums, so I’ll opt for an outfit that doesn’t skimp on artistic aspirations. I love a statement dress paired back to a chunky heel that’s easy when I’m on my feet for a while. I try to keep it elevated, because chances are the day ends at a fancy-ish restaurant that pushes my budget. After a long day of exhibitions (many of my favorites are on display at the Guggenheim right now), a nice meal to discuss the artwork that moved us is in order.

Back to Work

Transitioning back to the office is a bit of a brain teaser these days. It’s sporadic and unnerving, so when it comes to building an outfit outside of my comfort zone, I’m leaning into what makes me feel safe: a midi skirt. It’s my go-to item for when I don’t know what to wear in dressier scenarios. I appreciate the versatility of a rib-knit style that’s an easy way to feel put-together without compromising on comfort. Running into the office means expecting the unexpected, so a midi skirt styled with neutral basics (and a mask!) will put my mind at ease.

Sunset Hike

If I ever have a couple of hours to kill before dinner, you can usually find me on a hike to catch the sunset. This kind of adventure is casual enough that it doesn’t require intense gear—you can leave your not-so-cute hiking boots at home—meaning it’s a prime opportunity to mix gorpcore with cute athleisure. For me that means a colorful workout set, a playful fall jacket, and maybe a couple cans of wine to enjoy as the sky fades to amber.
