Another era of Degrassi is underway. A new iteration of the famous Canadian teen series is set to debut on HBO Max next year. No casting announcements have been made yet (but no doubt The Next Generation fans are hoping for some original stars to make cameos).
The upcoming chapter will focus on a new class in Toronto, and is expected to uphold the original show’s celebrated legacy of tackling real-life adolescence and its many challenges onscreen. Past episodes have revolved around issues like teen pregnancy, racism, AIDS, abuse, gender identity, violence, and more while taking viewers on a coming-of-age journey with a group of diverse, relatable teens.
The franchise was first created in 1979 by Linda Schuyler and Kit Hood and spans six series, the latest being 2016’s Degrassi: Next Class. Its most famous version, Degrassi: The Next Generation, which saw stars like Drake and Cassie Steele, just celebrated its 20th anniversary last year. What will come in Degrassi’s next stage? What will it be about?
HBO Max shared the gist while announcing plans for the revival: “Set in Toronto, the new series explores a group of teenagers and school faculty living in the shadow of events that both bind them together and tear them apart. The show travels deep into the hearts and homes of diverse, complicated characters, as they struggle to find their new normal, reaching for hope, redemption and love.”
Lara Azzopardi (The Bold Type) and Julia Cohen (Riverdale, A Million Little Things) will lead as showrunners. “What excites us maybe the most about reviving this beloved franchise is turning it into a truly serialized one-hour drama,” they said in a statement. “We’re honored to be given the opportunity to lead this evolution and bring this iconic series back into people’s homes.”
When will it premiere?
Sometime in 2023, but there’s no exact date yet. The series will consist of 10 hour-long episodes.
In the meantime, all 14 seasons of Degrassi: The Next Generation are set to arrive on HBO Max this spring.
