An Australian former professional surfer has died after allegedly being punched in the face outside a pub.
Chris Davidson, 45, hit his head on the pavement after being struck in the town of South West Rocks in New South Wales on Saturday.
Paramedics found him unconscious in Sportsmans Way just after 11pm and rushed him to Kempsey Hospital but he could not be saved.
A 42-year-old man was arrested in the town around 12.40am on Sunday and was later charged with assault causing death.
He was denied bail and was due to appear at Port Macquarie Bail Court on Sunday.
Specialist forensic officers were sent to examine the crime scene, New South Wales police said in a statement.
Sydney-born Davidson competed in the men’s world surfing championship tour in 2010, when he was ranked 14th overall, and in 2011.
Affectionately known as “Davo”, he famously beat reigning world champion Kelly Slater in two consecutive heats in 1996 after being granted a wildcard entry in the Rip Curl Pro at Bells Beach.
Slater, who has been crowned World Surf League (WSL) Champion a record eleven times, paid tribute to Davidson writing on Instagram: “Had many a good battle with this guy. One of the most naturally talented surfers I knew.”
The WSL said the “surfing community at large” is saddened by the tragedy.
“Our thoughts are with his family and friends,” it wrote in an Instagram post.
