John David Washington Recalls One Of The Greatest Days Of His Career On Tenet Set

Entertainment

John David Washington has recalled what he considers to be one of the greatest days of his career on the set of Tenet. The latest film from Christopher Nolan arrived in theatres last week after much delay, and so far appears to be a fan pleaser.

Hopes have been high for Tenet, after the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic made going to movie theatres an impossibility for several months. Now, however, the release of Nolan’s eleventh feature has seen numerous theatres open back up again. Nolan was adamant about wanting Tenet to have a big-screen release, even if it took several rounds of rescheduling to make that a reality. To date, the film has been pulling in sound profits considering the state of the film industry at the moment, but Tenet’s finances are no longer the biggest talking point surrounding it. As is typically the case with a Nolan film, the plot and its subtext are steeped in the sort of riddle that fans love to scrutinize. And while this might be the greatest highlight of Tenet for some, for at least one cast member, the greatest moment of the production came on set.

While chatting recently with Cinemablend, Tenet star John David Washington revealed that what he considers to be one of the greatest days of his career occurred while filming the sci-fi thriller. Exactly what made the day so great might come as surprise to some—as it had nothing to do with the intensity of being in a Nolan film or the spectacular practical effects that were a part of the shoot. Instead, it had to do with one of Washington’s co-stars, the legendary Michael Caine. In fact, it seems that Caine’s persona was simply too much for Washington at times, who admits that on more than one occasion he found himself watching the acting veteran perform rather than staying focused on the scene they were filming together. Said Washington:

“I felt like I got knighted that day. That was one of the greatest days of my career. He’s so funny and charming, Sir Michael Caine. And he’s just on it. He activates as soon as they yell action – he just transforms. I was in awe. I found myself watching the performance instead of being in the scene with him a couple takes. He was that captivating. So I will never forget that day.”

There’s no doubt that Caine has been a star for long enough to nail down the fundamentals of his craft, and working alongside him would be an honor for any actor – whether just beginning their career or well established. That being said, as the son of Denzel Washington, John David isn’t exactly unfamiliar with large scale acting talent. But clearly Caine’s persona is a captivating one if Washington couldn’t always stay focused while working with him. And because Washington is just starting off his career, there’s arguably no better training ground than to work with one of the finest actors in cinema. The entire experience was undoubtedly a highly beneficial one.

It’s also nice to see that Washington is willing to allow himself to be awed by those who have come before him. Not only is Washington’s reverence toward Caine a sign of a humble and intelligent actor, but it also takes class to publicly admit to being so overcome by a veteran actor’s talent. Seeing these two stars together on screen only serves to increase the appeal of Tenet, and prove how much it has to offer audiences.
