Man pulled gun at drive-thru over missing cream cheese on bagel, say police

US

A man pulled a gun on a worker at a drive-thru because there was no cream cheese on his bagel, according to police in Florida.

The motorist became angry at the Starbucks outlet on discovering the oversight last Wednesday and returned to the serving window screaming at the staff member, who also happened to be the daughter of the Miami Gardens police chief.

When she asked whether he had paid for the cream cheese, he became abusive and pulled out a gun, according to the arrest report.

Chief Delma Noel-Pratt told a Florida news channel the experience had traumatised her 23-year-old daughter.

While the man did not point the gun at her, she feared he would hurt her if she did not comply.

He drove off after she gave him his cream cheese.

“She felt in fear of her life,” Chief Noel-Pratt said.

“It was upsetting to me to know that someone would go to that extreme not having cream cheese on his bagel.

“As a mother I am very concerned.”

She said the case showed how anyone could be affected by gun violence.

“These things can happen even to me,” she said.

The next day, police stopped Omar Wright, 38, and he was detained.

He told officers he knew they had stopped him for the altercation at Starbucks, the arrest report said.

While being interviewed, Wright said he grabbed the gun and held it in the air because it was falling out of his pocket during the argument, but denied threatening the woman.

He has now been released on a $10,000 bond after being charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Wright told Local 10 News as he left custody: “Always go to Dunkin’ Donuts. Never Starbucks.”

In a statement, Starbucks said: “We were concerned to learn about this incident that occurred on Wednesday at one of our Miami Gardens stores.

“The safety of our partners [employees] and customers is always our top priority, and we are grateful to learn that no one was injured.”
