‘Enemy Of The People’ Begins Broadway Previews To Sell-Out Crowds

An Enemy of the People, director Sam Gold’s Broadway revival of the Ibsen classic starring Jeremy Strong and Michael Imperioli, is off to a great start, grossing more than $1M last week and playing to stand-room-only crowds.

In its first week of seven previews, Enemy grossed $1,005,141, filling 103.16% of seating capacity at Circle in the Square. Opening night is March 18.

In all, the 25 Broadway productions grossed $23,436,461 for the week ending March 3, a slip of about 10% from the previous week. Attendance was off only about 4%, tallying 198,730.

Also in previews, The Notebook musical grossed an impressive $783,763, filling 99% of seats at the Schoenfeld for seven performances. Opening night is March 14.

Water For Elephants, the circus-themed musical at the Imperial, played five previews (one performance was canceled), with a gross of $540,599 and attendance at 88% of capacity. Opening night is March 21.

Also in previews, Doubt with Amy Ryan and Liev Schreiber, grossed $470,942, with attendance at 94% of capacity at the Todd Haimes. Opening night is March 7.

In the final week at its non-profit run at the Hayes Theatre (before a commercial transfer to the Belasco on March 25), Second Stage’s Appropriate was a sell-out, grossing $950,927.

Prayer for the French Republic ended its celebrated run at the Friedman on March 3, filling 99% of seats at the venue and grossing $679,106.

Season to date, Broadway has grossed $1,166,956,482, with total attendance at 9,287,596.
