Olivia Rodrigo returned to Lollapalooza at Chicago’s Grant Park on Friday night. Rather than headlining like last year, however, she joined The Smashing Pumpkins on stage for “Thirty-Three” from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness.
Rodrigo, whose surprise appearance was somewhat spoiled by an airport spotting, has a connection to former Smashing Pumpkins bassist Melissa Auf der Maur. In a March interview with NME, Auf der Maur revealed a moment she had with Rodrigo, during which the young superstar told Auf der Maur’s 13-year-old daughter: “Without your mother, none of this would have happened.”
“That’s when it locked in for me that there are direct correlations,” Auf der Maur added. “In Olivia Rodrigo’s records, I notice the ’90s influence in both the songwriting and production, and of course her debut album, SOUR’s cover has a nod to Hole’s Live Through This, with the beauty queen.”

Her surprise turn with Smashing Pumpkins is only the latest in a running trend of Rodrigo sharing the stage with her alt-rock legends. Over the past few years, she has also shared the stage with The Cure’s Robert Smith, Weezer, David Byrne, Avril Lavigne, No Doubt, and more.
Elsewhere during Pumpkins’ Lollapalooza set, Yungblud joined in for a performance of “Luna” from Siamese Dream and Auf der Maur reunited with Corgan and co. for “The Everlasting Glaze.”
