Dolly Parton Movie Retrospective Set At AMC Theatres

Following the death Tuesday of two-time Oscar nominee and 11-time Grammy winner Dolly Parton, AMC Theatres is planning a retrospective of the multihyphenate showing two of her movies, 1989’s Steel Magnolias and 1982’s The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas.

The cinematic homage will be begin Friday and go through September 2.

AMC will present the pics at about 200 locations across the U.S., including AMC theaters throughout Parton’s home state of Tennessee. Tickets will be available at AMC’s Fan Faves value pricing.

The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas was based on the Broadway musical, which was based on a 1974 Playboy article about the closing of the Chicken Ranch in La Grange, TX. In addition to Parton, the Universal pic starred Burt Reynolds, Dom DeLuise, Charles Durning (who received a Supporting Actor Oscar nom) and Jim Nabors. The pic was rather successful in the day, grossing close to $70 million at the domestic box office. The Best Little Whorehouse in Texas opened to $11.8M in late July of that year, dethroning E.T.’s six-weekend run. Colin Higgins directed the pic.

Directed by Herbert Ross and based on Robert Harling’s 1987 play, which the scribe adapted, Steel Magnolias featured Parton part of a big starry female ensemble including Sally Field, Shirley MacLaine, Olympia Dukakis, Daryl Hannah and an up-and-coming Julia Roberts. The pic follows a young beautician, newly arrived in a small Louisiana town, who finds work at the local salon, where a small group of women share a close bond of friendship and welcome her into the fold. Roberts received a Supporting Actress Oscar nomination for the film, which grossed $86.4M domestically and close to $97M worldwide.

Parton was nominated for two Original Song Oscars: 1981’s “9 to 5” from the pic of the same name, and 2006’s “Travelin’ Thru” from Transamerica.
